FAQs

What does an architect actually do, and why do I need one?

Architect’s are trained professional who design buildings that are safe, functional, and visually appealing. They turn ideas into practical plans, balancing creativity with technical knowledge and building regulations. Architect’s ensure projects work well, look right, and meets legal and safety requirements. An architect also helps coordinate the process from early design through to construction, saving time and costly mistakes.

When is the right time to involve an architect?

An Architect should be involved from the very start of a project, ideally before any design or construction work begins. Early involvement helps shape clear ideas, set a realistic budget, and avoid costly changes later. An architect is especially important for new builds, major renovations, extensions, or projects that need planning permission. Bringing one in early ensures the design, regulations, and practical details are aligned from day one.

Will I need to arrange structural engineers?

In most cases, we arrange and coordinate structural engineers as part of the design team. We have trusted engineers we work with regularly, and will manage the collaboration so the structure and design work together smoothly. However, some clients prefer to appoint their own engineer, which is also perfectly acceptable. This is best agreed upon at the start of the project, so responsibilities are clear.

How do you approach projects?

We approach our projects with our core qualities, experience, creativity, and innovation. We perform these with an open mind, meaning the result is a building that reflects your vision and needs visually, and structurally.

What should I prepare before our first meeting?

As long as you have a rough idea of what is to be achieved, it does not need to be fully formed. Think about how the space will be used, any must-have features, a general budget range, and a realistic timeline. It’s also helpful to bring any site information, existing drawings, photos, or inspiration images you may have. Having these basics prepared helps us give clearer advice, and makes the first meeting more productive.

What type of construction projects can you help me build?

We are happy to work on many types of projects. Large or small, singular to multiple plots, self build, or construction industry professionals. We often work on Private Houses, Housing Developments, Alterations & Extensions, Retail & Commercial Properties, Historical & Restoration Projects, Leisure & Community Structures, Industrial Buildings, as well as Masterplans and Feasibility.

Do you work with sustainability in mind?

Yes, we actively promote sustainability. This is achieved through material selection, such as engineered woods like CLT and Glulam, the use of Sap calculations early on, feature integration such as heat pumps, and of course, the orientation and construction of the building as a whole. An example of our sustainable achievements can be seen in our Seaton Park community hub project in Arbroath, which used approximately 90% low carbon, and or recycled or reclaimed materials. We also received a Innovative Sustainable Development, commendation for the Walled garden House in Pittrichie from Aberdeenshire Council.
